The Dashboard Earns Its Reputation

ZenBusiness writes better software than most of this industry. One console, formation records and agent mail in the same place, a layout that behaves the way you expect it to. That is a real product and some owners are happy to pay for it. Nothing below disputes that.

$99 Once, $199 From Then On

Bought standalone, with no formation package attached, ZenBusiness agent service costs $99 plus state fees in the opening term. Every renewal after that is $199.

Both numbers are published. Only one of them is the price of the relationship. An Iowa entity carries a registered agent for its entire life, so the renewal is what you will pay in almost every year you own the company. The first year is a recruitment figure.

Nothing about the work justifies the step. The duty is a staffed Iowa address that can receive a summons during business hours. It is the same duty in 2031 as in 2026.

Nine hundred dollars across a decade, spent entirely on the gap between two prices for one statutory duty. If the dashboard is genuinely worth $100 a year to you, buy it with clear eyes and no regrets. Be honest about usage first, though. Most owners open an agent portal two or three times a year, on the days something turns up, and software you visit that rarely is hard to value at the price of a second subscription.

Moving the Appointment Off ZenBusiness

Iowa runs the change on one form, number 635_0119, submitted to the Business Services Division of the Secretary of State. Paper or the Fast Track Filing portal, your choice. For a limited liability company the state's fee is nothing. Iowa Code § 489.116 is the operative section, and if you find a guide citing an older number for agent changes, it predates the 2024 renumbering of chapter 489.

Three steps, in this order:

1. Sign up the replacement. There is nowhere on the form to leave the new agent's name and Iowa business address blank, so the appointment has to exist before the paperwork does.
2. File the change. One entry moves the appointment from the old agent to the new one, which is why your record never sits with the line blank.
3. Verify, then cancel. Confirm the new name in the state's business search before you close the ZenBusiness account, so the $199 does not process against a service you have already replaced.

One thing we want to be clear about: that $0 is Iowa's doing, not ours. No provider on any comparison page gets to claim credit for it, including this one. The state simply declined to charge for a change of agent, which means every vendor in this market competes here on price and service alone, with nothing to hide behind.
