LegalZoom is the name people already know. That matters more than comparison pages usually admit. Somebody starting a company has fifty unfamiliar decisions in front of them, and paying a premium to make one of them familiar is a rational way to spend attention. The company is decades old, the support operation is large, and choosing it is never the decision anyone second-guesses you on.

$249 a Year, Renewed Without a Conversation

Agent service from LegalZoom is $249 annually. No first-year markdown showed up in our review. It renews automatically.

That is the highest flat annual rate in the Iowa field. It is not the highest annual cost in the field, which is a separate and stranger fact about this market, but among providers that quote a single yearly figure, nothing is above it.

The $99 Position

Ending the Appointment: Iowa's Form, Fee, and Order

The state form is 635_0119. Its official name is a mouthful about changing the registered office and/or the registered agent, and the awkward phrasing is doing real work: Iowa treats the office and the agent as one fact rather than two, so a single filing updates both. It goes to the Business Services Division at the Iowa Secretary of State, by mail or through Fast Track Filing.

The fee for a limited liability company is zero, and the way Iowa arrived at that zero is worth a moment. Iowa Code § 489.122(1)(g) sets the fee schedule for LLC filings and prints "no fee" against the statement of change. On the very same sheet of paper, partnerships pay $5. A legislature that charges one entity type and exempts another has not overlooked anything. The exemption is a decision, which is a better guarantee than an administrative waiver would be.

Now the sequence, which matters more here than in most states because of how LegalZoom bills:

1. Appoint us. The form cannot be finished without an incoming agent's name and a matching Iowa business street address; the state requires the registered office entry and the agent's own office entry to be the same address.
2. File 635_0119. No payment accompanies it for an LLC.
3. Confirm. Pull your entity up in the Secretary of State's business records and look for the new agent.
4. Cancel with LegalZoom. Last, and before your renewal date, because that charge processes on its own whether or not you have moved.

Run it in that order and the appointment passes straight across. There is no window in which Iowa's file shows your company without an agent, which is the whole reason the state built the form as a substitution rather than a resignation.
